Portrait painting is a genre in painting, where the intent is to depict the visual appearance of the subject, most often a person. A well executed portrait is expected to show the inner essence of the subject (from the artist's point of view, of course) not just a physical likeness.

The term 'portrait painting' can also describe a painted portrait. Portraitists create their portraits by commission or are inspired by admiration or affection for the subject. If an artist portrayes him- or herself, the result is called a self-portrait.

Portraits can depict the subject 'full body', 'half length' or 'head and shoulders'. Beside human beings, animals, pets and even inanimate objects can be chosen as the subject for a portrait.

I've just seen the film about Modigliani and was quite impressed by it.It isn't just some funny and romantic stuff that is created only to entertain us, as far as I believe, the director saw his aim in shaking all our feelings and emotions, turning them upside down and shoking us. To my mind, he managed to do it. He showed us the life of the artist, of the talented artist, truthfully and without any imaginary facts. Talanted persons are often very sensible and usually don't understand the world around, so they find their peace in taking drugs or drinking alcohol, but it always don't bring them any good. I felt greatly sorry for the tragic fate of the protagonist, wouldn't forget this film for quite a long time.

Symbolism is the applied use of symbols: iconic representations that carry particular conventional meanings.

The term "symbolism" is often limited to use in contrast to "representationalism"; defining the general directions of a linear spectrum - where in all symbolic concepts can be viewed in relation, and where changes in context may imply systemic changes to individual and collective definitions of symbols. "Symbolism" may refer to a way of choosing representative symbols in line with abstract rather than literal properties, allowing for the broader interpretation of a carried meaning than more literal concept-representations allow. A religion can be described as a language of concepts related to human spirituality. Symbolism hence is an important aspect of most religions. However, not all use it, but most do at some point in time.

St Andrew's Day is an official flag day in Scotland.
