November, 11th

Several nations celebrate, in some way, the end of World War I, the ceasefire of which went into effect at 11:00am CET on this day in 1918.

It is Armistice Day in France and Belgium

It is Veterans Day in the United States (called Armistice Day until 1952, when the name was changed, and the holiday was re-geared toward all military veterans).

It is Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth of Nations, including United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War and the War To End All Wars, was a global military conflict which took place primarily in Europe from 1914 to 1918. Over 40 million casualties resulted, including approximately 20 million military and civilian deaths. The conflict had a decisive impact on the history of the 20th century.

Clockwise from top:
Trenches on the Western Front;
a British Mark IV tank crossing a trench;
Royal Navy battleship HMS Irresistible sinking after striking a mine at the Battle of the Dardanelles;
a Vickers machine gun crew with gas masks,
and German Albatros D.III biplanes

In South Korea they celebrate  Pepero Day, Farmers Day.

Pepero Day is an observance in South Korea similar to Valentine's Day or Sweetest Day. It is named after the Korean snack Pepero and held on November 11, since the date "11/11" resembles five sticks of Pepero. The holiday is observed mostly by young people and couples, who exchange Pepero sticks, other candies, and romantic gifts.

According to one story, Pepero Day was started in 1994 by students at a girls' middle school in Busan, where they exchanged Pepero sticks as gifts to wish one another to grow "as tall and slender as a Pepero"[citation needed] (Pepero means "thin like a stick"). However, it is more likely it was initiated by Lotte, the company which produces Pepero.

In Japan, a similar Pocky Day was held on November 11 in 1999, which was the 11th year of the Heisei era. The date, 11/11 of the 11th year, resembled 6 sticks of Pocky.

Unlike the previous days, November 12 has only two holidays to celebrate.

One is Bahá'í Faith:a Holy Day, Birth of Bahá'u'lláh.

the other is the  Birth of Sun Yat-Sen. It is the national holday observed in China and Taiwan.

Bahá'í Faith

The Bahá'í Faith is a religion founded by Bahá'u'lláh in 19th-century Persia, emphasizing the spiritual unity of all humankind. There are around six million Bahá'ís in more than 200 countries and territories around the world.

According to Bahá'í teachings, religious history has unfolded through a series of God's messengers who brought teachings suited for the capacity of the people at their time, and whose fundamental purpose is the same. Bahá'u'lláh is regarded as the most recent, but not final, in a line of messengers that includes Abraham, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad and others. Bahá'u'lláh's claim to fulfill the eschatological promises of previous scriptures coincides with his mission to establish a firm basis for unity throughout the world, and inaugurate an age of peace and justice, which Bahá'ís expect will inevitably arise.

T9 Dictionary

T9, which stands for Text on 9 keys, is a patented predictive text technology for mobile phones, developed by Tegic Communications, recently acquired by Nuance Communications. Its main competitors are iTap, created by Motorola, and LetterWise, created by Eatoni.

T9's objective is to make it easier to type text messages. It allows words to be entered by a single keypress for each letter, as opposed to the multi-tap approach used in the older generation of mobile phones in which several letters are associated with each key, and selecting one letter often requires multiple keypresses.

It combines the groups of letters on each phone key with a fast-access dictionary of words. It looks up in the dictionary all words corresponding to the sequence of keypresses.

International Phone Dictionary Day is a worldwide holiday created in order to celebrate the T9 Dictionary which exists on the majority of phones, including those made by LG, Samsung Electronics, Nokia, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Sanyo, Sagem and others. It is celebrated on November 13, by select groups and organisations around the world.

International Phone Dictionary Day will be first observed on November 13, 2007. It was established by a group of secondary school students. It was conceived as a satirical practical joke due to the existence of such strange international days as International Kitchen Garden Day. They believed that a day should be reserved for something more useful such as the dictionary on phones that allows for faster typing of messages.
Due to the theme of the 2007 International Phone Dictionary Day, some have decided to allow their phones on November 13 to make any mistakes that they want. Under this variation, the people observing the event are not allowed to change the first word that comes up when they type in what they wish. Although starting at first as a separate variation, this is now the official variation, accepted by the organisers, and being promoted around the world.

On this day there is ...

Feast day of St. John Chrysostom, archbishop of Constantinople
Roman festivals - Iovis epulum; feast of Feronia
R.C. Saints - Bricius of Tours; Mother Cabrini; Saint Homobonus; Stanislaus Kostka, All the Saints of the Premonstratensian Order.

November'15th
Ii is America Recycles Day in the USA
Recycling in the United States

A number of U.S. states, such as California, Hawaii, Oregon, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Iowa, Michigan and New York have passed laws that establish deposits or refund values on beverage containers in order to promote reuse and recycling. Most are five cents per can or bottle. Michigan's deposit is 10 cents. Some cities, such as New York City and Seattle, have created laws that enforce fines upon citizens who throw away certain recyclable materials.

The 10th annual America Recycles day was held on the 15 November 2006. Hundreds of events annually are being held across the country to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and to encourage Americans to sign personal pledges to recycle and buy recycled products.

Run by the recycling sector organization National Recycling Coalition, America Recycles Day 2006 is being sponsored nationally by global aluminum company Novelis, stationery firm Staples, waste firm Waste Management Recycle America, the American Beverage Association and the EPA.

Although America may not enjoy much of a reputation for environmentalism on the global stage, in some US cities recycling levels are much higher than, for example, in the UK.

Shichi-Go-San in Japan, a traditional rite of passage and festival day for three and seven year-old girls and three and five year-old boys

Shichi-Go-San (七五三) literally means "seven-five-three". As it is not a national holiday, it is generally observed on the nearest weekend.

History
Shichi-Go-San is said to have originated in the Heian Period amongst court nobles who would celebrate the passage of their children into middle childhood. The ages three, five and seven are consistent with Japanese numerology, which dictates that odd numbers are lucky. The practice was set to the fifteenth of the month during the Kamakura Period.

Over time, this tradition passed to the samurai class who added a number of rituals. Children—who up until the age of three were required by custom to have shaven heads—were allowed to grow out their hair. Boys of age five could wear hakama for the first time, while girls of age seven replaced the simple cords they used to tie their kimono with the traditional obi. By the Meiji Period, the practice was adopted amongst commoners as well, and included the modern ritual of visiting a shrine to drive out evil spirits and wish for a long healthy life.

Current practice
The tradition has changed little since the Meiji Period. While the ritual regarding hair has been discarded, boys who are aged three or five and girls who are aged three or seven are still dressed in kimono - many for the first time - for visits to shrines. Three-year-old girls usually wear hifu (a type of padded vest) with their kimono. Western-style formal wear is also worn by some children. A more modern practice is photography, and this day is well known as a day to take pictures of children.

Today, I would like to tell you about ST.Margaret.She died on the 16th of November. It is not a Holiday but but it is the great event in the Scottish spiritual life

Saint Margaret (c 1045 – 16 November 1093), was the sister of Edgar Ætheling, the short-ruling and uncrowned Anglo-Saxon king of England. She married Malcolm III, King of Scots, becoming his Queen consort.

Veneration
Margaret was canonised in 1251 by Pope Innocent IV on account of her personal holiness and fidelity to the Church. She would personally serve orphans and the poor every day before she herself would eat, and would rise at midnight to attend church services every night. The Roman Catholic Church formerly marked the feast of Saint Margaret of Scotland on 10 June, but the date was transferred to 16 November, the actual day of her death, in the liturgical reform of 1972. Queen Margaret University (founded in 1875), Queen Margaret Hospital (just outside Dunfermline), North Queensferry, South Queensferry and several streets in Dunfermline are named after her.

Mass Effect officially arrives November 20th
Posted Aug 30th 2007 12:45PM by Richard Mitchell
Filed under: News, Mass Effect

Emerging from a wormhole in space, the official release date for the next RPG from BioWare, Mass Effect, has been announced. No longer confined to the nebulous date of "November," Mass Effect will be landing on retail shelves -- where it will no doubt encounter hostile alien life -- starting November 20th. We were very impressed with what we saw of the game at E3, and the media that has arrived since then has done nothing to dull said impressions. Yup, we can't wait to play Peter Moore's most anticipated game. Alas, now we are saddled with the knowledge that we have nearly three months to wait for it. Sigh ... if only there was something to keep us occupied until then.

This is all I have managed to find :)

International Men's Day

International Men's Day is an international holiday, celebrated on the first Saturday of November. It was suggested by Mikhail Gorbachev and was supported by the United Nations in Vienna, and other organisations[1]. The tradition began in 1999, probably by analogy to International Women's Day.Indian Men's rights organisation Save Indian Family has started an International campaign to build consensus on IMD on November 19th. As a first step, it has accepted 19th November to be celebrated in India as Men's Day. With this at least 20% of world's population accepts 19th November as International Men's Day.

Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College - Center for Management Studies recognize International Mens Day and is promoting IMD over Radio Active FM 107.8Mhz at Bangalore. Radio Active is the campus community radio station of CMS. Mr.T.R.Ramakrishnan, Lecturer at CMS will be on air at 11 am on 20th November 2007.

November, 21st

Today we celebrate World Television Day  and World Hello Day.

The UN General Assembly established November 21 as World Television Day to encourage nations to exchange cultural programming focusing on peace, security, economic and social development.

The announcement was made in resolution 51/205, at the 99th plenary meeting of the Assembly, on December 17, 1996. The day November 21 was chosen because the first World Television Forum was held on that day in 1996, where media figures organized to discuss the increased significance of television in the world.
