Catharsis

     Let me introduce one of my favorite groups called Catharsis. I am not a mettallist, but nevertheless I like such music as my tastes are very diverse.

The group’s history in short words:

     At the very beginning of their work in 1996, Catharsis was known as a group playing in a melodic doom/death style. The album “Proles Florum” released in 1998 was accepted by the public with great pleasure.
But later the group surprised everybody: they refused from their “habitual” doom style having transformed into the sympho power group. Later released mini album "Febris Erotica" confirmed the correctness of that decision. Melodic sympho power metal album was admired not only on the territory of Russia but abroad as well.
     By 2000 Catharsis received the status of the one of the leading Russian Metal groups. The album called "Dea" showed the grown popularity of the group and confirmed its increased creative powers. Catharsis  started the beginning of concerts of such well- known groups as NIGHTWISH, BLIND GUARDIAN, AMORPHIS.
All famous groups have conflicts among their members. So, Catharsis is not the exception of this rule. Because of it, the group had to say ‘’goodbye” to 3 of the musicians. The new staff produced the music greater by its energy and influence. It was reflected at the album “Imago”. It was created on such elements as euro- power, neo- classical music and beautiful symphonic arrangements. Even Margarita Pushkina took part in working of creating the album. She wrote lyrics for 4 compositions.
     In several months, Catharsis released the English version of the album including 2 remixes, one multi-media clip. It became some kind of the experiment as before the lyrics had been written only in English.
The group  is constantly  working hard in order to please their fans..

     It is very different, as the group’s staff  was changed several times, we can see the progress and evolution of  Catharsis’ style .As for me personally I like the album released after 2000.

The meaning of the name of the group is interesting.

CATHARSIS
The Greek word for purgation, cleansing, and purification is a word that has become part of the learned
vocabulary of scholars. It is derived from katharein, a Greek word meaning “to cleanse.” It has come down to contemporary discourse by way of religious, medical, and learned traditions.

From the discussions of scholars the word “catharsis” has come into the common vocabulary. Enjoying a tragedy we refer to our experience as a catharsis. We think that we know what we mean. But we may not know exactly the meaning of this positive qualification. Jakob Bernays said that the word is a pompous expression that the educated person has at hand but that no thinking person will know precisely what it means. Else says: “We have grown used to feeling—again vaguely—that serious literature is hardly respectable unless it performs some `catharsis.' `Catharsis' has come, for reasons that are not entirely clear, to be one of the biggest of the `big' ideas in the field of aesthetics and criticism, the Mt. Everest or Kilimanjaro that looms on all literary horizons” .

The very interesting thing that attracted me in the group is the content of the songs, their many – facet deep sense and, at the same time, the combination of its some musical elements, strong vocal. You may agree with me or not after having read the versions of one song. I am not imposing my opinion, I just want to share with it.

Do you know that ... symphonic power metal is one of the EIGHT types of power metal :O .

Power metal bands that make extensive usage of instruments normally found in classical music or keyboards imitating them similar to symphonic metal. These additional elements are often used as key elements of the music when compared to normal power metal, contributing not only an extra layer to the music, but a greater variety of sound. Keyboard heavy bands such as Sonata Arctica who use their keyboards simply as synths without an orchestral sound are not truly part of this genre.

As for power metal, it  is a style of heavy metal music typically with the aim of evoking an "epic" feel, combining characteristics of traditional metal with thrash metal or speed metal, often within symphonic context. The term refers to two different but related styles: the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal, and a later more widespread and popular style based in Europe (Especially Germany, Italy and Scandinavia) with a lighter, more melodic sound and making frequent use of keyboards. With mainstream metal's fall from popularity and the growth of the underground metal scene, power metal can be seen as a parallel counterpart to extreme metal within the metalhead subculture.

One of the styles of power metal is American/classic power metal.

American power metal emerged in 1980s America as an offshoot of heavy metal and speed metal. It is usually fast, straightforward and somewhat heavy and aggressive, but with a distinct epic 'fighting' feel. Keyboards never take a major role in this style, with the focus on vocals and riffs. The music is very similar to its influences but coined the term 'power metal' and was vital in inspiring the later melodic power metal movement. Europe has its own bands playing in a very similar style such as Grave Digger.

Main Influences: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Accept, Savatage
Examples: Manowar, Jag Panzer, Crimson Glory, Metal Church

Below you can see Eric Adams, the lead singer of  Manovar,  an American heavy metal band from Auburn, New York, which formed in 1980. They are known for writing lyrics with an emphasis on fantasy and mythologic topics.
